We’ve let the snowy days inspire some serious fun here on Mack Boulder’s campus – with student created Winter Olympics.  It’s a great example of how our Units of Inquiry begin to reflect the student’s passion, inspiration, creativity and interests.  Instead of watching the kids get antsy for a snow day, our creative teachers let them learn and play in a new way.  From the events to the ceremonies, the ideas were all their own!

Jenny Bolch, first grade teacher writes:

A big snow dump made everyone wish they were out skiing and playing in the snow! We took the opportunity as a class to use mapping to plan the 2014 Mackintosh Winter Olympics! Then students participated in the Olympics. This exciting event included an opening ceremony, a tree shaking and snow dumping competition, a snow piling teamwork event, and a speed sliding game. The entire Olympics was wrapped up by a beautiful closing speech.

In 4th grade, the Winter Olympics took on a “Community Building” spin:

January ended with a big snow!!
We took the opportunity that Mother Nature threw at us to do something a little different today.
In U of I we began with a short writing question: How do you make a community? We front loaded the question by discussing that, once you have a group of strangers gathered together, how do you turn that group into a community? The children responded with answers such as “You need to have a common interest.” “You need to make everyone feel comfortable.” and “Everyone should feel that they have a voice.”
I then layered on the fact that one thing that is important to creating a community is to build shared experiences. Whether that is doing the hard work to get through an assignment or project done or in creating fun, memorable memories together. We then broke to design the 2014 Mackintosh Winter Olympics!!
The children designed such events as running and hitting targets with snowballs (biathlon) snowball bowling, long jump, speed snow angel and snowman creation and distance and accuracy events throwing snowballs. We even had a demonstration event in which some of our budding traceurs showed off a little Parkour!
It was a very nice opportunity to have some fun and build our own community at the end of the week.
I hope you all get a chance to enjoy the snowy weather this weekend!!
