468efa2a-898f-45cd-b1e6-da6787d52823Mackintosh Academy-Littleton has created a Solar Scholarship fund to benefit Denver-area gifted elementary students who are culturally, linguistically, and/or economically diverse.

In September 2015, as a direct result of a sixth grade student capstone project, Mackintosh Academy Littleton was awarded a $95,000 grant by the State Farm Insurance Youth Advisory Board to install solar panels on all campus buildings. This makes Mackintosh the first school in the area to receive the majority of its power from solar energy. In their grant application, the students stipulated that the resulting energy savings be used for tuition assistance to increase diversity in our school community and to allow underprivileged gifted children the opportunity to attend a school where they can achieve their potential and engage in making the world a better place.

Diane Dunne, Mackintosh Academy Head of School, said, “As one of the grant-writing students told me, it was so exciting to realize that she didn’t have to wait until she was grown up to make a difference in the world. The Solar Scholars initiative widens the circle of students who feel that sense of empowerment.”

Delia Guilbert, Mackintosh eighth grade student, added, “I’m very excited to have the solar panel savings go toward the scholarship fund. I love Mackintosh, and I know that there are many other kids who would benefit from and love Mackintosh as well, but who may be unable to attend without the financial support given by our existing scholarship fund. With the Solar Scholars program, we will be able to help a greater number of students, making a difference for all of the children that will potentially benefit from the program. With writing this grant, we were granted not only solar panels but also the ability to help potential classmates and friends attend our phenomenal school.”

Using the anticipated energy cost savings and private donations from within our community, Mackintosh Academy is committed to awarding at least one Solar Scholarship, beginning with the 2015-2016 school year. The school is seeking corporate and foundation support to expand its reach to other qualified children in the Metro Denver area who would benefit from attending our school.
